Recall & Reaffirm: Our God Saves

Psalm 3,4,5,6,7

Today let’s look back and recall the faithfulness of God. As we do let’s also reaffirm our trust in Him as we enter a New Year.  We will do this with King David as our guide.

Even a cursory overview of the Psalms reveals that King David was a realist. He was too practical a man to look at life’s difficulties and glibly say “chin-up, just grin and bear it”. When David looked at life’s trouble and dangers, he did so through the eyes of faith. Today we look at five consecutive psalms, and in them find a total of fifty-five verses. About fifteen verses are vivid descriptions of very real and present trials that David faced. Yet these are overshadowed by at least thirty verses that declare great truths about God’s presence, his power, his protection; and how we can and should pray and praise God in light of these truths.

The Truth About Our Troubles:

The enemies of God, his gospel and his people are real!  David’s words ring true for many of us: “how many are my foes”; “many are rising against me”; I am languishing”; “my soul is greatly troubled. But you, O Lord – how long?”

The Greater Truth About Our God:

As real and present as the trouble may be, it is overshadowed and outweighed by the great truths about God. “But you, O Lord, are a shield about me”; “the Lord sustained me”; “you have given me relief”; “the Lord has set apart the godly for himself”; “you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety”; “the Lord judges the people”; “he answered me from his holy hill”; “my shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart”.

The Response of Faith from God’s People:

In light of these truths, what should my response be? Again, God’s Word gives us the guidance we need:

My Prayer: “I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me”; “Arise, O Lord! Save me, O

 my God!”; Give ear to my words, O Lord”; “Be gracious to me, O Lord.”;

O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge”;

My Praise & Worship: “Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people!”;

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you”;

My Practical Steps of Obedience: But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for

himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah   Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. (Psalm 4:3–5)
