Matthew’s gospel is a historical account of the life and ministry of Jesus. Like the other gospel writers, Matthew generally follows a basic chronological order for the major events in Jesus’ life.  Yet in Matthew, as in the other gospels, many aspects of Jesus’ life and ministry are arranged in a topical order. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Matthew writes and arranges his gospel account for a very specific purpose: to show us that Jesus is the Sovereign King, the Messiah promised in the Old Testament, descending from the line of David and Abraham.
